Final Charter

The Local Sediment Management Group (LSMG), a group originally formed during 2000, is once again coming together to provide agency and stakeholder input to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Walla Walla District, on sediment management. While the group originally focused primarily on dredged material management, its purpose will now be expanded. The LSMG will concentrate on the identification of sediment sources in all tributary watersheds to the lower Snake River reservoirs; and the identification of existing pertinent literature and GIS mapping and data. This group's formation and direction is consistent with the guidance on formation of local planning groups provided by the National Dredging Team (NDT). The LSMG will continue to develop in accordance with policies and procedures currently evolving for the Regional Dredging Team (RDT), as referred in the April 26, 2002, policy letter jointly signed by Brigadier General David A. Fastabend (Corps of Engineers, Northwestern Division Commander) and L. John Iani (EPA, Region 10, Administrator). A final charter is now available that defines the roles and responbilities of the LSMG members and sets up the group structure.

The LSMG is intended to play an important role in the implementation of sediment management activities, and will be a forum to address regional sediment issues associated with the lower Snake River drainage area. The LSMG members include Tribes and state and federal agency representatives. Additionally, public ports within the study area have been invited to participate, as have other entities with an interest in sediment management (i.e., land management agencies, environmental groups, and transportation interests).
