U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to manage nuisance wildlife on Lewiston Levee

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Walla Walla District
Published March 23, 2026

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Walla Walla District, in collaboration with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, has contracted with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to begin control measures for burrowing rodents and other nuisance wildlife along the Lewiston Levee.

This work, a standard part of levee maintenance, will begin immediately and is expected to continue for several months.

The primary goal of this effort is to ensure the ongoing safety and integrity of the levee system, which is crucial for the protection of local communities and infrastructure. The burrowing activities of animals such as rock chucks (yellow-bellied marmots) can create tunnels that compromise the structural integrity of the levee. This work will be conducted during periods of low public visitation and will be supervised by trained wildlife specialists.
