AHSAHKA, Idaho -- Dworshak Dam is increasing flood risk management releases from approximately 12,900 cubic feet per second (cfs) to 14,900 cfs. This is necessary to manage space for the upcoming spring runoff due to higher-than-average inflows and a high reservoir level.
This winter and spring have seen unusually high inflows into the reservoir, which is currently about 24 feet below full pool and significantly above the 30-year average for this date. The operation will manage flood risk while keeping total dissolved gas levels at or below the 110% target.
Releases are expected to remain between 13,000 and 15,000 cfs through the end of March and into early April. Officials will continue to monitor conditions and adjust flows as needed. At this time, they do not anticipate any issues with the reservoir's summer refill.
The public should be aware of the dangers of fluctuating river flows. The Clearwater River is currently deep, cold, and fast. Extreme caution is advised near riverbanks.
