POMEROY, Wash. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Walla Walla District reminds visitors at Illia Dunes and Granite Point to recreate responsibly and follow posted rules during the busy end-of-summer season.
Both alcohol and illicit drugs are banned at these sites. Because Illia Dunes and Granite Point are on federal land, federal law applies — meaning marijuana remains illegal, regardless of state laws. Additionally, local regulations prohibit alcohol use at both locations.
Visitors should expect an increased presence of law enforcement officers and park rangers.
Site-Specific Guidelines:
- Granite Point: Cliff jumping and diving are prohibited. Visitors must remain within designated areas. Parking is strictly limited to 16 vehicles.
- Illia Dunes: Parking is limited to approximately 100 vehicles. Visitors must plan for limited dam crossings at Lower Granite Dam, open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Northbound crossings occur on the half-hour; southbound crossings are at the top of the hour. Crossings close promptly at 4:30 p.m., so allow time for delays or use alternate routes.
General Recreation Rules:
- Parking: Park only in designated USACE lots. No buses are allowed due to space and maneuverability constraints.
- Prohibited Items: Glass containers and fireworks are banned on USACE lands.
- Sanitation: USACE provides free trash bags for "pack it in, pack it out" removal. Please place filled bags in on-site receptacles.
- Pets: All pets must be kept under control.
Following these rules protects visitors and natural resources and it ensures these sites stay open to the public.
