What is it?
The Mill Creek Flood Control Project protects Walla Walla from flooding. Completed in 1942, it's a system designed to manage water flow and includes:
(Think of it like a safety net for when the creek gets too full!)
Mill Creek Diversion Dam: Redirects food waters from Mill Creek into the Diversion Canal into the reservoir (Bennington Lake).
Bennington Lake: A man-made reservoir that stores diverted flood water.
Mill Creek Storage Dam: Holds back water in the reservoir (Bennington Lake).
Intake Tower: A gated tower that intakes and releases water to the multiple channels.
Canals: Russel Creek Canal and Mill Creek Return Canal.
Channels: Mill Creek Channel and the Diversion Channel.
Arm Gates: Diffuse the water moving down Mill Creek Channel during flood events.
Mill Creek Channel: Levee system that runs from the foothills of the Blue Mountains through downtown Walla Walla.
Why was it built?
After a devastating flood in 1931, Walla Walla needed better flood protection. Virgil B. Bennington championed the cause, leading to the project's authorization in 1938.
