Portage Information

PORTAGE OF NON-MOTORIZED RECREATIONAL CRAFT AND OTHER VESSELS UNSUITABLE FOR LOCKAGE IS THE PREFERRED METHOD OF TRANSPORT AROUND DAMS. Non-motorized craft may be locked through if moored to a motorized assist vessel and if all personnel are on board the assist vessel.  All personnel must be wearing life jackets.


This portage is on the North side of the dam, and is approximately 4200 ft in length.


Ice Harbor

Upstream site is boat ramp on north side of river immediately upstream of the dam. A vault toilet is available, but there is no phone or water. Downstream site is a cobble beach below the navigation lock (about a 1 mile portage).


Lower Monumental

Northern route: Slightly down-hill along Devils Canyon Road. 1.2 miles.

Southern route: Slightly downhill along Matthews Road.  1.5 miles.


Little Goose

Portage route is located on the north side of the river.  The upstream location is marked with a sign and portage dock.  The route runs downhill approximately 0.3 miles.  The downstream portage location is a cobble beach, downriver from the large red “boat restricted zone” sign.


Lower Granite

Both upstream and downstream portage sites are located on the south side of the river. The upstream site is located at a Offield Landing boat ramp. 1.7 miles of paved roadway separate the sites. The roadway is mainly flat with a hill at the midway point. Downstream site is just a notch in the south shore. Access to and from the road is a short gradual slope of sand and small rocks.
