WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Cleaning and repairs on the Bennington Lake return canal, located between the lake’s storage dam and Mill Creek, near the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ project office, will require temporary and/or intermittent closure of some public areas, starting Monday, May 14, through mid-June.

Contractors will be using the horse trailer parking area near the Mill Creek Project office as a staging and storage area for their equipment. Visitors with horse trailers should use the Bennington Lake parking lot. There may also be intermittent and/or temporary closures of the paved trail along the canal and the parking lot located about halfway up the hill on Reservoir Road, next to where the open-air section of the canal transitions to an underground culvert. For safety, visitors are asked to avoid work and equipment-staging areas, and respect all closure signs and barriers.

The $243,067 contract for cleaning the open-air portion of the return canal and replacing its expansion joints was awarded to Belarde Company, Inc., of Snohomish, Washington.

The $60,800 contract for rehabilitating the section of the return canal running from Reservoir Road and connecting with Mill Creek, next to the project office, was awarded to Verdis, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Visitors are encouraged to look for facility updates on information kiosks located at major trailheads and on the Mill Creek Project’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/millcreekdam.
