AHSAHKA, Idaho -- Solar eclipse-watchers near Ahsahka, Idaho, are invited to join U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff at Dworshak Dam and Reservoir on Monday, Aug. 21, for a top-of-the-dam eclipse experience.
A portion dam’s top deck will be open to visitors starting at 8:15 a.m. Eclipse-watchers are encouraged to bring solar eclipse viewing glasses, portable chairs, and non-glass/non-alcoholic beverages.
The duration of the eclipse, as it occurs over Ahsahka, is estimated to occur between 9:10 and 11:50 a.m.
www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/@z-us-83520. Visitor capacity on top of the dam will be limited to 100 people. Backpacks, purses, coolers or strollers will not be allowed on top of the dam. The viewing area adjacent to the Dworshak Visitor Center will be available for visitors with mobility issues and those exceeding the dam-top capacity.
Planning ahead will help make your eclipse experience unique and enjoyable. Here are some things to consider:
• Protect your eyes. Bring your eclipse glasses -- Dworshak Dam does not sell eclipse glasses. The eclipse will be amazing, but it’s not worth your eyesight. To adequately protect your eyes, it is important to purchase eclipse glasses or hand-held viewers which are certified with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard. • Driving. Get there early; parking could become scarce.
• Pack a picnic. Snacks, water, and a lunch will help make waiting for the big event more enjoyable. Glass containers and alcoholic beverages are not allowed on top of the dam.
