BOISE, Idaho – A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-managed scenic viewpoint of Lucky Peak Lake on Highway 21, near mile marker 11 in Ada County, Idaho, will close for asphalt-repair work, May 14 until mid-June, according to Corps operations officials at Lucky Peak Dam.

There will be minor impacts to northbound travelers on Highway 21 during some portions of the repair work. For safety, the two uphill lanes will be reduced to a single lane for a few days when work occurs at the Viewpoint and Highway 21 intersection. Caution signs and traffic cones will be stationed in the area, and motorists are reminded to exercise caution in this 45-m.p.h. zone. Drivers should be aware that this sharply curved section of the highway frequently requires traffic to slow down as truck and boat trailer traffic exits and enter the highway to cross Lucky Peak Dam. Numerous cyclists also use Highway 21.

The repair work is funded by a Federal Lands Transportation Program (FLTP) grant. The FLTP funds projects that improve access within federal lands (national forests, national parks, national wildlife refuges, national recreation areas, and other Federal public lands) on transportation facilities in the national federal lands transportation inventory, and owned and maintained by the federal government https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/fastact/factsheets/fedlandstransfs.cfm.

“The award of this FLTP grant will help us complete some maintenance items, and bring some pleasant improvements to this popular roadside area,” said Keith Hyde, Lucky Peak natural resource manager. “Full closure of Viewpoint (including weekends) will allow contractors to work uninterrupted -- without mobilization/demobilization delays -- meaning the work will be completed faster and cheaper.”

Visitation at Viewpoint was approximately 58,000 during 2016. Like and follow Lucky Peak Dam and Lake on Facebook to stay up to date on recreation opportunities and news https://www.facebook.com/LuckyPeakLake/
