20-053 Anglers and recreationalists beware of fluctuating water levels on the Clearwater and the North Fork of the Clearwater

Published Oct. 5, 2020

Ahsahka, Idaho. – Dworshak Dam powerhouse will conduct testing on one of their hydropower units on October 13 and 14, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The test will increase the flow from the powerhouse, resulting in fluctuations of water depth and flow on both the Clearwater and the North Fork of the Clearwater rivers.

Anglers and other recreationalists could see one to two feet of fluctuation in water levels and an increase in current during testing. Wading anglers need to pay particular attention during this time to avoid becoming stranded on rocks or islands in the river. Boaters should be aware, some gravel bars and rapids that are passable during higher flows may not be passable once testing ends and the rivers level returns to lower flows.  Drivers will need to anticipate rising water and park vehicles away from the river to prevent damage to their vehicles and personal property.
