Walla Walla, WA – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Walla Walla District will implement an alcohol ban at the Granite Point recreation site on Lower Granite Lake on May 27. This change is designed to enhance public safety and increase the overall recreation quality of the site.
The alcohol ban at Granite Point will address some of the specific hazards associated with alcohol use at the site.
Granite Point is a popular spot for dangerous activities like cliff jumping, which is a prohibited activity, and swimming across the narrow canyon channel, which is dangerous because of the large amount of barge traffic on the river. These activities become even more dangerous when combined with alcohol use.
Alcohol bans or restrictions at other federal sites have resulted in an improved visitor experience and satisfaction by reducing the number of complaints related to alcohol abuse. The ban on alcohol at Granite Point will allow the Corps and local law enforcement partners to better redistribute resources across the Lewiston and Clarkston Valley by reducing the disproportionate amount of alcohol related complaints and incidents at the site. These efforts will contribute to creating a more pleasant experience for all visitors.
