RICHLAND, Wash. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Walla Walla District is overseeing habitat improvements at the Yakima Delta Habitat Management Unit (HMU) in Richland.
Improvements are focused on removing a large stand of Russian Olive. The invasive tree is overgrown to the point of impacting native habitats. Its removal will improve the overall quality of the habitat, promote biodiversity and reduce catastrophic wildfire risk.
USACE contactors will begin mechanical removal of the stand this week and continue through the winter months. The work will involve heavy machinery. While the HMU will remain open, the public is asked to maintain a safe distance from work crews and their machinery.
For questions, contact the Walla Walla District at 509-527-7020 or via email at cenww-pa@usace.army.mil.
