WALLA WALLA, Wash.  – The Walla Walla District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking volunteers to repair the Whitetail Trail near Mill Creek Dam and Bennington Lake on Saturday, June 2, as part the Corps’ support for National Trails Day.

The American Hiking Society's National Trails Day® is held the first Saturday of every June.

Volunteers are asked to meet at the Bennington Lake parking lot at 8 a.m. and work until noon. Water, sport drink powder, and snacks will be provided.  The trail work will include building new trails, removing fence posts, and installing fence posts. The goal of the trail work is to stop materials from eroding into the Bennington Lake parking lot, which causes large potholes to form. The Corps will have a limited number of tools and gloves available.  Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, shovels, and heavy-duty rakes.

“It’s an opportunity to be a good steward of our public lands, and we’re grateful for the help,” said Jeremy Nguyen, a Corps natural resources specialist at the Mill Creek Office.  “Volunteers can also bring their own lunch and enjoy it at the lake after the work is done.”

The Corps will have a limited number of tools and gloves available. Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, shovels, and heavy-duty rakes.

Individuals and groups are welcome.  Volunteers are asked to contact Nguyen if they plan to work that morning.  He can be reached at 509-527-7165, millcreek@usace.army.mil, or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/millcreekdam.

The worksite is located just off the entrance to the Bennington Lake parking lot. To get to Bennington Lake from Walla Walla take Hwy 12 East to the Airport Way exit. Turn right on Airport Way.  Airport Way will turn into Tausick Way at the first stop light.  Continue straight onto Tausick Way. After you cross Mill Creek, Reservoir Road is the next road on the left. Take Reservoir Road all the way to the Bennington Lake parking lot.
