McNary Dam hosts free fishing derby for kids

UMATILLA, Ore.Young anglers are invited to a free fishing derby at McNary Lock and Dam on Saturday, May 14, from 9 a.m. to noon.

This annual derby is co-sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. The event will take place at Fountain and Experimental Ponds, located within the McNary Wildlife Nature Area. There is no cost to participate, and registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

The fishing derby is for children ages 12 and younger, and of all levels of experience. More than 1,000 rainbow trout, provided by ODFW, will be stocked in the ponds for the derby.  Several local community businesses are supporting this event by providing prizes to be awarded for the first-, second- and third-biggest fish caught by children in each of the following age groups: 6 and younger, 7 to 9, and 10 to 12.

To get there, travel 1 mile east of Umatilla, Ore., on Highway 730, turn north onto McNary Dam Road, follow signs to nature area; located at Columbia River Mile 292, on the south riverbank.
