Rooks Park to temporarily close next week for Boy Scout Day Camp

Published June 17, 2011

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Parts of Rooks Park will be temporarily closed Wednesday, June 22 through Friday,June 24 for the Pioneer District of the Boy Scouts of America Cub Scout Day Camp. The sections of the park that will be closed off include the portion of the paved path that runs along the Mill Creek Diversion Dam levee and the Rooks Park picnic shelter.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permitted the Cub Scouts to set up temporary archery and BB gun ranges facing the levee and requires this area to be closed for safety purposes. The trail will be closed starting at 7 a.m. each day and will re-open around 4 p.m. after the day’s activities end.

About 100 Cub Scouts are expected to participate in this year’s day camp. Some of the camp’s activities include cooking, beading, leatherwork, obstacle courses, BB gun shooting and archery. The Cub Scouts will also be doing a service project as part of the day camp. They will be weeding the planter bed at the Rooks Park entrance and will plant plants donated by local businesses.
