Fish screen installation work to temporarily close portions of Mill Creek Recreational Trail

Published Aug. 25, 2011

WALLA WALLA, Wash.  –  Visitors using the Mill Creek Recreational Trail along the north levee of Mill Creek in Walla Walla, Wash., may find portions of the trail temporarily blocked to accommodate construction activities as the City of Walla Walla installs a new fish screen on a culvert connecting to the creek, located between Rooks Park and the Corps of Engineers Mill Creek Office, according to Corps officials.

The work activity will begin began Aug. 29 and will be completed by Sept. 1.  The temporary trail closures will occur intermittently as the work progresses along the 50-foot section of the trail.

Visitors are encouraged to continue to use and enjoy the Mill Creek Trail during the construction period, but to respect caution signs and construction barriers, and keep an eye out for large construction equipment and vehicles operating within the worksite. This additional traffic will continue throughout the work period.

Once installed, the new fish screen will stop endangered fish species from entering the city's water treatment plant outfall culvert.  This new screen is a joint project between the City of Walla Walla Public Works Department and the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife and is being conducted on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-managed property.

For more information about this project contact City of Walla Walla Water Treatment Plant Supervisor Tom Krebs at 509-522-3775.

For information about Corps of Engineers recreation opportunities on the Mill Creek Recreational Trail and Rooks Park, please contact the Mill Creek Office at 509-527-7160.
