13-070 Fire crews conducting Elk Creek Meadows prescribed burn through Saturday at Dworshak

Published Oct. 24, 2013

AHSAHKA, Idaho – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Natural Resources staff at Dworshak Dam and Reservoir will work with Clearwater-Nez Perce National Forest fire crews to conduct prescribed burning just southwest of Dicks Creek beginning today and continuing through Saturday, Oct. 26. Dicks Creek is located on the north side of the reservoir between Freeman Creek State Park and Dent Acres. Burn plans are contingent upon favorable weather conditions.

This prescribed burn is part of the Elk Creek Meadows Stewardship Project initiated several years to restore ponderosa pine ecosystems. Logging in this area has been completed, and prescribed burning will reduce fuel loads left from logging, improve wildlife habitat and enhance the area for ponderosa pine regeneration.

Visitors to the area should expect to see smoke or fire. The prescribed burn may affect north side lakeshore campsites and adjacent areas including Minicamps 10.7, 10.9 (Damascus Group Camp), and 11.7. Signs are posted in the area of the burn to advise visitors.
