16-059 Mill Creek division works pedestrian bridge slated for repairs, intermittent closures

Published Aug. 16, 2016
WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Work to replace aging infrastructure on the division works pedestrian bridge, located on Mill Creek between the Mill Creek Project office and the Walla Walla Community College, will require intermittent closures Wednesday through Friday, Aug. 17-19.

Contractors will be replacing the concrete corbel (ledge) that supports both ends of the bridge with steel structures of a similar nature. The bridge will be closed at times while the contractor is performing work that could pose a safety risk to visitors. Whenever there is not a safety risk, bridge crossings will be allowed to continue as usual.

There is currently low risk of bridge failure due to the aging corbels. The Corps bridge inspection team identified the corbels for replacement during the last bridge inspection, because the concrete is starting to show wear and could pose a safety risk if it is not addressed. The bridge was part of the original construction which was completed in 1942.

The $29,355.86 contract was awarded to Copper River Energy, of Boise, Idaho.
