16-072 Sand Station Recreation Area campsites to be closed Oct. 1 for beach and campground reconstruction

Published Sept. 30, 2016

UMATILLA, Oregon –Sand Station Recreation Area campsites near Umatilla, Oregon, will be closed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers until further notice on Sunday, Oct. 1, to reconstruct beach and camping areas. The beach has been severely eroded by waves from the reservoir during the past several years.

Day use of Sand Station will be allowed during construction. Restrooms will remain open.

Corps staff will restore or remove campsites on the beach. The RV and camping sites in the parking lot area will also be redesigned.

Public safety is important. It's not safe for visitors to camp at Sand Station while reconstruction is under way. Please avoid construction areas, and park safely.

Sand Station will remain closed until further notice. Length of construction efforts is not yet determined because Corps staff is doing the construction work when they are available. The Corps has worked within a restricted federal recreation budget environment in recent years.

Sand Station Recreation Area has been open to all campers for a maximum of 7 nights. The Corps has previously closed Sand Station from time to time for maintenance work.

Other recreation areas, campgrounds and recreation opportunities in the area are listed on the Walla Walla District website at http://www.nww.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/McNary-Dam-and-Lake-Wallula/.
