    WALLA WALLA, Wash. – If your upcoming Washington’s Birthday weekend plans include a road trip to visit family and friends on the opposite side of the lower Snake River, you may want to keep in mind that U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dams are closed to cross-dam public vehicle traffic on federal holidays, unless otherwise announced. Lower Granite Lock and Dam, near Pomeroy, Wash., will be open for public vehicle crossings on Washington’s Birthday, Monday, Feb. 16. Two other dams which normally allow crossings will be closed on the holiday -- Little Goose, near Starbuck, Wash.; and Lower Monumental, near Kahlotus, Wash.

    POMEROY, Wash. – Public vehicle access across Lower Granite Lock and Dam reopened this morning after contractors completed construction of a temporary buttress on one of the bridge pier foundations for the Almota Ferry Road leading to the south-shore entrance across the dam.

  • 15-011 Rainstorms likely to increase streamflows throughout the region; Corps encourages seasonal flood awareness

    WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Mill Creek flows through Walla Walla are expected to increase significantly as a result of a storm system moving through the Pacific Northwest over the weekend. Although flow levels are anticipated to remain well below flood stage, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff advise people to use caution around the cold, fast-moving water in Mill Creek and other rivers, streams and creeks throughout the region. The National Weather Service’s Pendleton station announced a “Hydrologic Outlook” for areas in the Blue Mountains to expect precipitation amounts between 1-3 inches from series of warm, wet storm systems moving through the area during the weekend.

    AHSAHKA, Idaho – Water discharges from Dworshak Dam near Orofino, Idaho, will temporarily fluctuate during the next week while U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff performs a series of operational tests on hydroelectric generator unit number 3, officials at the dam announced today.

  • 15-009 Lower Granite Dam closed to vehicle crossings

    POMEROY, Wash. – Public vehicle access across Lower Granite Dam is closed until further notice, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials at the Walla Walla District announced today. One of the bridge pier foundations for the Almota-Ferry Road leading to the south-shore vehicle entrance across the dam was compromised yesterday during construction activities of the Juvenile Fish Facility’s primary dewatering structure. Therefore, the Corps restricted use of the bridge to minimize unnecessary risk to the public.

  • 15-008 Dworshak offers timber sale to improve forest health

    AHSAHKA, Idaho – The Walla Walla District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, invites interested parties to bid on the sale of approximately 122 acres of timber on Corps-managed forest lands at Dworshak Dam and Reservoir in Clearwater County, Idaho. The timber sale is planned to contain and control an outbreak of Douglas fir beetle in the area east of Dent Bridge in Sections 25 and 26 of T38N, R02E, Boise Meridian.

  • 15-005 Ice Harbor dredging complete; lock operations return to normal -- Corps dredging operations continue in Lewiston-Clarkston area

    WALLA WALLA , Wash. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed federal navigation channel dredging at Ice Harbor Lock and Dam yesterday, Jan. 14. Ice Harbor lock operations have returned to normal and dredging equipment has been removed, including water quality monitoring buoys, and relocated upstream to work areas in the Snake and Clearwater rivers at Lewiston-Clarkston.
