  • 14-035 Mill Creek Diversion Dam reclassified as safer by Corps

    WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Walla Walla District’s Mill Creek Diversion Dam located upstream of Walla Walla, Wash., recently received a safer “Low Urgency” classification from the Corps following a recent analysis and assessment of the dam and implementation of risk reduction measures. The Mill Creek Diversion Dam was previously screened and classified within the Corps’ Dam Safety Action Classification (DSAC) program as “High Urgency” in January 2009. After completing a potential failure modes analysis and semi-quantitative risk assessment, the Corps recently concluded that risks due to Mill Creek Diversion Dam breach are low. The Corps has a robust dam safety program which includes multiple dam inspections, monitoring, evaluations and risk reduction measures. The improved classification was made by Corps headquarters in Washington, DC.

  • 14-034 Dworshak Visitor Center announces new summer season and dam tour hours; Full-service and primitive camping also available

    AHSAHKA, Idaho – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Dworshak Dam Visitor Center announced new hours and dam tours for the 2014 summer recreation season. The Visitor Center will be open seven days a week starting on Saturday, May 24, on Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Dam tours will be offered daily at the Visitor Center starting May 23 through Labor Day weekend. Start times for dam tours are at 9:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 2:30 p.m. at the Visitor Center.

    Young anglers are invited to a free fishing derby at McNary Lock and Dam on Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to noon.

  • 14-032 Dworshak Reservoir and Columbia River on Bassmaster Magazine’s list of Top 100 best bass fishing spots third year in a row

    WALLA WALLA, Wash. – For the third year in a row, two water recreation locations managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Walla Walla District made the nationwide Bassmaster Magazine Top-100 list of best places to fish for bass, according to information released April 23 by B.A.S.S. Communications at http://www.bassmaster.com/news/introducing-100-best-bass-lakes-2014. The third annual list ranking the country’s best bass lakes found Dworshak Reservoir, located near Ahsahka, Idaho, on the north fork of the Clearwater River, rated as number 47 the 2014 Top-100 chart. It was ranked number 26 in 2013 and number 85 in 2012. The Columbia River in Oregon and Washington jumped up to number 14 on the Bassmaster Top-100 list from number 21 last year. It was number 20 in the Bassmaster 2012 list. Much of the river’s natural resources recreation opportunities are managed by the Corps’ Walla Walla, Portland and Seattle districts.

  • 14-031 Dworshak to decrease discharge flows tonight at midnight plus Saturday midnight to begin refilling reservoir; Boaters and anglers should remain alert to changes in water elevation and flow

    Discharge flows from Dworshak Dam into the North Fork of Clearwater River will be decreased late Friday night and again on Sunday morning to begin refilling Dworshak Reservoir, according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers water-management officials. Flows will decrease Friday night at midnight from approximately 10,700 c.f.s. (cubic feet per second) to about 5,000 c.f.s. At midnight on Saturday, flows will be further reduced from 5,000 c.f.s. to about 2,400 c.f.s.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Walla Walla District invites public comments on an environmental assessment (EA) for the Nursery Bridge Drop Structure Repair project on the Walla Walla River in Milton-Freewater, Ore. Comments are due by May 21.

    Thursday, May 15, marks the start of the summer schedule for recreational boaters using navigation locks to travel past U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dams on the Columbia and Snake rivers, Corps navigation planners announced today.

  • 14-028 Corps seeks public input for Boise River Feasibility Study; Meetings set in Boise, Idaho City, Caldwell and Garden City

    BOISE, Idaho – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Walla Walla District and the Idaho Water Resources Board (IWRB) will conduct a series of scoping meetings to support the Boise River Feasibility Study and Environmental Impact Statement. The IWRB is the non-federal sponsor for the study, which will focus on ways to reduce flood risk, and meet current and future water supply in the lower Boise River watershed.
