    Walla Walla resident reflects on Ice Harbor 1962 dedication; Junior ROTC cadet colonel escorted Vice President Johnson 50 years ago

    As Ice Harbor Lock and Dam celebrates 50 years of successful service to the region and nation with a Corps of Engineers celebration on June 16, a Walla Walla resident has special memories of the dam’s dedication events on May 9, 1962. And he has an autographed photo signed by the Vice President of the United States to show for it.

    Corps’ Mill Creek-Bennington Lake trails designated National Recreation Trail System; Celebrate June 2 National Trails Day at a Corps recreation area

    More than 20 miles of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-managed trails meandering along Mill Creek’s south shoreline and around Bennington Lake were designated a National Recreation Trail System by Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Director of the National Park Service Jonathan B. Jarvis today.

    Corps program may provide rehabilitation assistance to damaged flood risk management facilities

    Sponsors of flood risk management projects within the Walla Walla District which were damaged by spring flooding events that occurred April 1 through May 18 could find some help repairing their levees and related structures from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers if they submit their request for assistance by June 29, according to Corps emergency management officials.

    Ice Harbor Lock and Dam oil leak repairs include fish protection efforts

    As the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers team Ice Harbor Lock and Dam performs repairs of power transformer heat exchangers or “cooling units” that recently leaked oil into the river, the Corps is taking precautions to protect Endangered Species Act-listed fish. This effort is part of the Corps’ overall environmental stewardship efforts.

    Lower Granite open for vehicle crossings on Memorial Day; Travelers should plan alternate routes across river at ‘LoMo’ and Little Goose dams

    If your upcoming Memorial Day weekend plans include a road trip to visit family and friends on the opposite side of the lower Snake River, you may want to keep in mind that most U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dams are closed to cross-dam public vehicle traffic on federal holidays, unless otherwise announced.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will begin accepting the America the Beautiful Federal Recreation Pass Program’s new Interagency Annual Pass for Military (Military Pass) at its more than 2,500 USACE-managed recreation areas nationwide.
